‘Cultivating Career At Campus’ -Nikhil Joshi
-Nikhil Joshi
(Lecturer in ‘Language & Communication Skills’, IT/CP Dept.-GCET)
“I always do what I cannot do
and this is how I get to do them”
(-Pablo Picasso)
The quotation aforementioned enthused me to write this article. I had read it in an article published in a leading English newspaper. It truly spreads lot of rays of optimism, doesn’t it? Here I would like to focus on some fear factors that generally people do possess. At large people know their drawbacks but they are not much sentient of those drawbacks and this is what they are missing perhaps and this is why very often they are at loss.
So let’s begin to find out certain drawbacks and not only that, but now ‘today’ is the right time to shape up our abilities by culturing our strong points, turning our weaknesses into strengths and to make our path ahead a smoother one. To begin with, the first required action is-‘awareness’, because I think this is the solution of major, almost all the difficulties we are facing in life. Just one question to ask oneself is-‘Am I aware enough about my strong points and weak points as well?’ What’s your answer? Keep it in your mind or write it down on a piece of paper. How much a piece of paper can help you that you will realize sooner!
After ‘awareness’, the next word to be focused on is-‘today’. Let me share a brief story here on this word. A youngman used to keep a stone on his table and there was only one word written on that stone. That word was-‘today’. He used to keep this stone on his table just to remind himself everyday not to postpone today’s work on tomorrow and one day he became the president of his nation. He was Abraham Lincoln. Think over it, how much a rubbish stone can help anybody! ‘It sounds so foolish’-if this is your reaction then you need not read further.
In this article, especially for students, by the term ‘campus’ I mean campus activities and campus interviews as well. Don’t you think that campus activities would shape and sharpen your talents to grab the golden opportunities in campus interviews? Majority of us would surely agree upon this. Now let’s go further in discussion of the same. Keeping two things in mind we can initiate the whole discussion and these two things are as following:
(1) ‘Dreams and Goals’
(2) ‘Honors and Achievements’
As it is said that one should always dream higher, adding a view point of keeping one’s feet down to earth, one should have aspiration and inspiration of achieving something in one’s life. It’s a process of moving from being to becoming throughout your existence. Millions of people get themselves resting upon some point of being only. The real journey begins when you start thinking about to take a move from being to becoming in life. For this journey obviously one’s dreams and goals would play an important role in choosing direction, enlightening path and of course getting closer to the winning point, passing by certain turning points of life. The starting point of the way towards achievement is to have some concrete action plan and it begins with self analysis on the basis of questions like who you are and what you are. Majority of the people around you would be less interested in the first question compared to the second one. ‘What you are’- that would be more considerable factor for them. On the basis of that they would like more to finger out your weak points, then why not to begin with our own weak points by ourselves. Try to focus on certain drawbacks of your personality and put forward your best efforts to turn out your weaknesses into strengths through the process of improvement because the word ‘improve’ itself contains I-M-PROVE. So you are to prove yourself. It will take some time and probably certain factors may emerge to you as something like ‘impossible’. But again here we can apply the same theory of looking at the terms positively and by breaking this term into three pieces; you will get I-M-POSSIBLE. It surely depends upon you; how you look at the things.
Now let’s move on the next phase of the topic. Whether it’s a campus activity or a campus interview, one should follow the direction as following:
- preparation and planning
- participation and achievements
- performance and domino effect
…and ultimately future plan
In this play, one should go for following things one after another specially for campus interviews:
- self analysis
- career analysis
- job analysis
- future scopes
Now taking a turn from campus activities to campus interviews, let’s see how the previously discussed points would help you. In this case your inter personal skill as well emotional intelligence may help you a lot by following certain ways as given below:
- Be open, don’t try to deceive.
- Show empathy.
- Don’t put on an air of superiority.
- Listen with an open mind.
- Perform with the best efficacy.
- Try to understand, monitor and control our emotions as well as those of others.
- A little care will surely lead to true success in work and maintaining relations as well.
- Don’t assume certain fear factors before you start doing your task.
- Update yourself everyday.
- Create your own opportunity, don’t miss it and enjoy success.
Campus activities may lead you to realization of traits of your personality along with a chance to come in face to face situation with your abilities, skills and talents. Unconsciously it will be shaping up your guts to come out. In the same way even the interviews are the chances to evaluate yourself and in that case also one should remain as a performer because SUCCESS is realization of the estimate you place upon yourself. But the last word here to sum up is that in every idea implementation is must. Unless you yourself utilize yourself, no one can help you and only bookish knowledge will lead you nowhere. Books are good friends but the real world is a better one and perhaps that’s why a British author William Steron says-“My knowledge of books has diminished my knowledge of the world.” So what are you waiting for? Make your action plan and start implementing it each day and keep one thing in your mind that the only place where success comes before work is dictionary.

Seminar Success
The Definitive Keys to Seminar Success
by rdokoye
Successful seminars are generally based upon the concept of giving you the power to believe you can. The speakers usually speak from insights and expertise gained from their own life experiences. Self-improvement seminars give the attendees the tools - and the motivation - to succeed. Thus, a well-organized and well-presented seminar that helps people up the ladder of success can't help but succeed because we are a success-oriented society - it 's an easy sell with an income potential limited only by your ability to express yourself.
You won't need an office to make it big with self-improvement seminars. The public doesn't visit you - you take your programs to them. Self-improvement seminars appeal to almost everybody - from blue-collar workers to top executives.
The average cost per person to attend a seminar is very close to $300 - so your basic audience will be from the upper-income brackets - but if you handle the promotional aspects properly, you'll pull them in from lesser income brackets as well.
Many seminar promoters employ sales teams to call upon top company executives and either gets them to partially pay the cost of several employees to attend as educational or business improvement investments - or to foot the bill for the sponsorship of a "group seminar" for all of that company 's middle management personnel. Many specialty speakers make in excess of $100,000 per year with regular motivational and/or self-improvement seminars in this fashion.
In the beginning though, you'll get your start by staging seminars for the general public in restaurant banquet rooms, hotel ballrooms, and convention centers. These will entail advertising costs, plus the charges for the rented space, and an "on-hand" inventory of the materials you want to sell to the people who attend your seminars.
Generally, you'll do best with an intensive radio advertising campaign during the week preceding your seminar date. In a metropolitan area of half a million population, you should probably spend a couple of thousand dollars on radio advertising, plus about half as much for flamboyant newspaper advertising. Some seminar promoters invest a quarter of their budget in newspapers, then another quarter in direct mail and/or telephone advertising, with half going into radio. Of course, the allocation of your advertising budget should be related to the previous proven pulling power of each media within that particular market. Not too much concern is given to television advertising, excepting for guest appearances of the community service talk shows.
Most promoters spend all of this effort and money to promote a series of free seminars. These free seminars usually draw huge crowds, during which special "front men" turn everybody on with super-motivational stories designed to whet the appetite of those in attendance for more. These free seminars generally last only 45-minutes to an hour, and are strictly motivational in purpose.
Each person in attendance is handed a brochure describing the up-coming "main event" as they leave these free seminars. An attempt is made to get a commitment - at least a deposit for the cost of the "real thing," which is usually set for the week following. Those who do not commit themselves to attending the big one are then contacted by professional telephone sales people and given the complete sales presentation between the time of the free seminar and the date of the real thing, which and experienced telephone sales people - you can count on closing about 30 to 35% of those who attend your free seminars.
If you don't have the confidence or inclination to participate - be the principal speaker - at your seminars, you can hire local sales training people, professional people from the medical specialties, local "experts" known through your area newspapers or broad cast media, and/or nationally known speakers willing to travel and operating through speakers' bureaus. You might want to contact Burt Dubin of Personal Achievement Institute - 225 Santa Monica Blvd., Suite 305 -Santa Monica, CA 90401... or Dottie Walters of the 'National Speakers' Bureau' - 400 W. Foothill Blvd. - Glendora, CA 91740.
Finally, I reiterate the fact that there are literally millions of people in all parts of the country willing and able to pay you for helping them to improve themselves. You can start with meetings in your living room, or your local restaurant. All it takes is action on your part to get set up and a push from yourself to start making it happen. Best of luck and now get going with it.
